a girls trip to Ibiza had a lot too much to drink and woke up in bed with a guy and really no memory of the night now the kicker is he is a patient of hers and he is 17 so even if hubby is OK with this there is going to be fall out yes Alex is married and a doctor and the mother of two young daughters so in the beginning of this book I m thinking wow what bad luck, not that I condone cheating, butThen we get Jonathan s point of view the 17 year old now I have a 15 year old and a 21 year old son so this probably influences how I look at this.ick so is Jonathan a crazy stalker or the victim Things start coming out and I was lead in one direction and then in a different direction and it was quite the journey along with Alex and Jonathan s point of view we got the points of view of several other characters just to add to the craziness i m not sure if anybody was a very reliable narrator.Along with all the twists and turns this book touched on a few very relevant issues of course there is the obvious one Sexual harassment and people in power abusing it but I really thought interestingly the book really touched on social media and the power of the like I have to admit it was a bit disconcerting to see someone achieve fame for being a victim, maybe For me it made Jonathan story less believable it s just quite amazing how much social media has altered and dictates our lives.Absolutely without a doubt recommend to all fans of psychological thrillers with brilliant twists thank you so much too Bookouture and Net Galley for a copy of this brilliant book flag 126 absolutely brilliant twist I m filing this one in my what the heck did I just read folder. The story starts a reader off by introducing Alexandra Inglis who is apparently waking up to a one night stand after a drunken night out with her girlfriends in Ibiza This probably wouldn t be a problem if Alex was single and wild and free but she s actually a married doctor and mother of two The problem though was her husband went down the cheating route first and in her drunken state this was her payback. However, as we all know the story isn t going to end with Alex slinking home and confessing her revenge lay No, before Alex knows it she finds out that her mysterious man is actually a seventeen year old patient and so begins the story of her life slowly falling apart.Having read another title by Lucy Dawson I already knew she was a great author that could spin an amazing tale to keep a readers attention but I wasn t prepared for what I found in White Lies The style in which the story is written is even a unique way to peel back the layers of the plot.We start with Alex s point of view but slowly it changes as the story goes on giving depth to the plot and keeping a reader guessing This one is the type of story that once you think you know what is happening the author does an about face and totally changes everything to really make one s head spin And yes, in the end I would say it was an absolutely brilliant twist Definitely recommend this one to the psychological thriller fans out there.I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. For reviews please visit author, Lucy Dawson has found a very novel, interesting way to present this thriller Each chapter made me feel like a pendulum swaying tick tock by the second, as per the character s narration I love the author s way of writing She made every character appear to be earnestly truthful and honest to the core Jonathan and Alex had their own truths, and I had no way of verifying them I kept searching with is her 17 year old patient, Jonathan Day And so begins a he said, she said tale as we start to hear from Jonathan and others involved in the story such as Alex s husband, Jonathan s parents and his girlfriend It s a consuming read that I truly struggled to put down as I read these alternating view points White Lies is unsettling in places because I honestly had no idea who to trust Each character that we meet could be lying, but they could be telling the truth But which is it Not knowing who I could trust meant that I tried to maintain some sort of detachment from the characters, not wanting to empathise with them or see them as anything other than a potential liar That meant it became a little bit of a different read than I was used to and as I read about these characters being victimised part of me wondered whether they deserved it or whether they were telling the truth Also worth noting is the fact that the storyline centres around the alleged grooming of a teenager by an older woman, which in the wake of the MeToo movement is not something we see a lot of with this even being alluded to here in the story That viewpoint by some, of how this situation, a lad with an older woman is somehow acceptable than when it s the other way round is so wrong There s a lot to discuss in this story and it s a really good look at the doctor patient relationship and the obsessions that can be spawned from that As the story progresses we know it s heading towards what I hoped was going to be a dramatic and worthy finale to the story If I m honest I felt that it was lacking Given that this is a psychological thriller I was expecting the author to go for the shock value or the cop out ending that would cause the most anger and surprise to the reader , and Lucy Dawson did go for an ending that to me just left me thinking Eh It wasn t a satisfying ending to everything that I had read up until that point, and we don t get full closure regarding all of the characters which left me wanting after I finished this story The entire story had me gripped and wanting to know what had really happened, but then the ending arrived and was just a huge disappointment I do recommend this book to psychological thriller fans because the endings to these sorts of books are always subjective and so what I didn t enjoy, you might and so White Lies is a book I do recommend flag 24 likesLike see review View 1 comment Jun 25, 2018 Tammy rated it really liked it Shelves release 2018 A psychological thriller that had my head spinning, unsure of what I chapter, page, paragraph, sentence and word. The simple truth is,I didn t want this story of secrets, lies and manipulation to end.Dr Alexandria Inglis has gone on a girl s weekend away to Ibiza to try and forget,at least for a couple of days her problems at home. Her Husband Rob recently admitted that he had a one night stand with his work colleague who just happens to be much younger and prettier than Alex The plan was to try and have some fun, have a few drinks and a good laugh It definitely wasn t a part of the plan for Alex to get paralytic and have a one night stand with Jonathan.A young man who turns out to be only seventeen and just happens to be a patient of Alex s at the surgery where she works back home. This is essentially a he said she said story that consists of three parts and a epilogue. The chapters in the first part mainly alternate between Alex and Jonathan but also include a couple of chapters that are told from the point of view of Alex s partner at the doctors surgery,Dr David Harper The second part is voiced by Alex s husband Rob and Jonathan s girlfriend Cherry.Reading their thoughts and feelings about the people involved and the events as they unfolded around them added realism and depth to their characters. They weren t just secondary characters who hung about in the background and added nothing to the story.Throughout the whole book I was constantly changing my mind about who s version was the truth.Even now because the author has left that open to the readers discretion,I still have absolutely no idea who was telling the truth.I can t say I found any of the main characters very likeable,I would have felt sympathy for Rob if he hadn t cheated on Alex.As in real life Alex soon discovers the sad fact is that in modern society a person s life and reputation can be so easily destroyed by people on the internet,tv and the press If it means you get likes and comments, the ratings for your show shoot up or you sell loads papers then who cares about the truth or the consequences and how it affects someone else s life.I was hooked in by this absolutely brilliant, gripping thriller from the first page right through toe totally unexpected conclusion.Highly recommended, worth far than five stars and most definitely going to be on my list of my favourite books of this yearMany thanks to Bookouture for a arc of this book via Netgalley in author and I was hooked from the first page, I loved how each of the characters told their version of events in separate chapters and with each new chapter my mind was changed again and again as to who was the guilty party The author depicts brilliantly what a moment of madness can do to a person s life and how things can never be the same again The twist when it came was most unexpected, I would never have predicted that outcome I loved this book and will certainly be reading of her work.Thank you to Bookouture for the auto approval, I will post my review on and flag 10 likesLike see moment of madness when completely and utterly drunk, while on a girls weekend away, leads to all manner of consequences There were times where I was doubting just about everyone but at the same time I just had to keep turning the pages to see what was going to happen next I was curious about everything the book even touches on relatively recently real world events that have been in the news This is a book that makes you think about the patient doctor relationship, and about how easy it could be for someone in a position of trust to make a mistake that could be perceived as abuse even if the don t realise it at the time Unpredictable and utterly compelling, White Lies is another absolutely fantastically crafted book from Lucy Dawson All I can say is clear a day or a few hours depending on fabulous trip to get a break from working motherhood turns into a living nightmare for Dr Alexandra Alex Inglis The book starts with Alex waking up with a severe hangover after a wild night in Ibiza She startles when she discovers she s not alone in her hotel room and that a handsome young man in naked in her bed She has little recollection of what happened the night before other than she knows she drank way too much alcohol The young man stumbles out of the hotel room after she nearly kicks him out Embarrassed and ashamed that she had a one night stand, Alex goes home and admits her misdeeds to her husband, Rob, hoping they can reconcile. We soon learn that Alex s husband, Rob, isn t a saint, either He recently had a one night stand with a mutual friend, which absolutely devastated Alex Alex and Rob agree that they are even given their one and only affairs and commit to working harder on their marriage Things seem to be looking up for Alex until she discovers the young man she slept with in Ibiza was not only her patient but also only 17 years of age.The young man, Jonathon, threatens to reveal the affair to the world if she doesn t sleep with him again, but Alex refuses Shocked, she immediately reports this to her supervisor, David, who starts to write a formal report on the situation His work is interrupted by Jonathon s parents, who storm into Alex s practice and demand that she be held accountable for having a sexual relationship with their son.Soon, word gets out to the public and media about Alex and Jonathon s affair Jonathon claims that it wasn t merely a one night stand but a three month affair where Alex pursued him incessantly He claims he was victimized and plans to write a book about his experiences Alex is persecuted and burned at the stake in social media She loses weight, loses friends, and nearly loses her practice Who is telling the truth Why would Jonathon lie about the affair What s in it for him Is Alex delusional This story dives headfirst into the terrifying consequences of an affair in a social media saturated world What once may have been dealt with behind closed doors or between a few families is now a social media event This has serious consequences for all the parties involved in this rollercoaster ride of a book. What I especially enjoyed about this book is that it told the story from multiple perspectives Alex and Rob s affairs had a ripple effect on the people around them Would Alex, for instance, engaged in an affair if Rob hadn t admitted to having one before she left for Ibiza How does the affair affect the parents, friends, and partners of those involved I also felt like I really understood every person affected by the affairs the characters were fleshed out and had very sound reasons for feeling the way they did.Thank you to the author, Lucy Dawson, the publisher, Bookouture, and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of White Lies.
